Bronze is open from school year 9 and age 13½+. Silver needs school year 10 or above, and being under 18 on the date of the expedition. Gold typically follows Silver. Most people start at Bronze and work up, but you can join at whichever level fits your child’s age.

Yes — you’ll need to be registered (or registering) for DofE, either through Chelmsford Scouts or with an eDofE account from school or another youth organisation, before booking a place on an expedition. Chelmsford can’t accommodate participants doing their whole award through a different organisation.

It’s two separate steps. First, register for the DofE scheme itself — this sets up the eDofE account, badges and certificates, and has its own registration cost set by Essex County Scouts. Then, separately, book a place on that year’s Bronze or Silver expedition before the registration deadline (see Key Dates).

Yes, it runs alongside normal Scouting rather than replacing it, and many participants work toward both at once. Within Scouting, DofE also links directly to the Chief Scout’s Platinum, Diamond and Queen’s Scout Awards.

Bronze expedition: £20 per person. Silver: £50 for the practice expedition, £75 for the assessed expedition, or £125 for both — these are estimates and could rise by up to £10 depending on final numbers and campsite fees. On top of that there’s a separate DofE scheme registration cost, set by Essex County Scouts, which covers your eDofE account, badges and certificates.

Payment details are provided once you’ve completed the expedition booking. The scheme registration cost is confirmed separately by Essex County Scouts when you register for DofE itself.

Leaders assess each participant’s readiness throughout training beforehand. Expeditions themselves run on a self-reliant basis — teams travel and camp without a leader walking with them, carrying an emergency phone, a GPS tracker, and full written leader and campsite contact details. Leaders check in with each team at the start and end of each day, with extra visits if there’s ever a concern.

Attendance at the required preparation sessions matters — they’re how leaders build up the skills and confidence a self-reliant expedition depends on. If there’s a clash, let your leader know as early as possible; missing required sessions can affect a participant’s place on the expedition.

Kit requirements are covered during the training evenings, with dedicated kit hand-out and kit return sessions built into the programme (see Key Dates). Ask your leader if you’re not sure what’s needed, or whether kit is available to borrow.

The booking process asks about any medical or additional needs so leaders can plan properly around them. If you’d rather talk it through first, get in touch with the DofE team before registering.

Not directly — Chelmsford doesn’t organise Gold expeditions, but plenty of other organisations do. For the Residential section, leaders will need to approve your chosen placement for suitability before your young person goes.
